Mathematical Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Graphs and Networks

The seminar on “Mathematical Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences: Graphs and Networks” is a collaboration between three divisions of The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest (ICUB), the Exact Sciences, the Humanities, and the Social Sciences. The aim of the seminar is to explore the use of mathematical methods in the humanities and social sciences, with a focus on the use of graph theory in these disciplines. The interdisciplinary character of the seminar is exemplified by the themes included in the program: e.g., the applicability of network theory to social networks, citation networks, and networks for the dissemination of knowledge. The seminar is addressed to all researchers interested in the applicability of graphs and networks to disciplines in social sciences and the humanities and aims to offer a better understanding of scholarly tools available for research in the digital age. The format of the seminar combines lectures with discussions of texts and examples. The seminar is coordinated by Dr. Gabriel Hâncean.

First meeting: 13 April 2017

Location: Every Thursday, from 12:15 to 13:45 at 1 Dimitrie Brandza St., RO-060102, Bucharest, Romania.
